ARTSCAPE

Now set within the lush, 250-acre grounds of the New York Botanical Garden, the exhibition features towering floral forms arranged in seasonal displays, a luminous pumpkin-filled infinity room and a shimmering field of 1,400 mirrored spheres by Yayoi Kusama. Brimming with whimsical, undulating sculptures, site-specific installations and smaller works adorned with the Japanese artist’s signature polka dots, Cosmic Nature unfolds as a sweeping celebration of Kusama’s vibrant and exuberant artistic journey spanning decades.

The immersive showcase also introduces four new works, including a tentacled sculpture that greets visitors at the entrance. Among the highlights are a 16-foot-tall dancing pumpkin, an “Obliteration Greenhouse” and a newly created infinity room that captures and reflects the surrounding greenery.

Alongside these are smaller acrylic paintings, textile sculptures and works on paper some dating back to 1945 which together trace the evolution of Kusama’s enduring fascination with nature and her unmistakable polka-dot motif.

While many of the playful floral forms gesture towards broader reflections on humanity’s relationship with the natural world, certain installations feel more intimate in tone. One such piece, Flower Obsession, invites visitors into a setting inspired by the artist’s own greenhouse, blurring the line between personal memory and immersive experience.
