The rivalry between Pakistan national cricket team and Bangladesh national cricket team in Test cricket has evolved from complete Pakistani dominance to a far more competitive contest in recent years. Since Bangladesh received Test status in 2000, the two Asian sides have met in 15 Test matches. Pakistan have won 12 Tests, Bangladesh have won two, while one match ended in a draw.

Pakistan dominated the early years of this rivalry. Between 2001 and 2021, Bangladesh struggled badly against Pakistan’s pace attack and experienced batting line-up. Legendary Pakistani names such as Inzamam-ul-Haq, Younis Khan, Misbah-ul-Haq and Yasir Shah repeatedly punished Bangladesh in long-format cricket. Pakistan’s victories often came by huge margins, including innings defeats in Multan, Karachi, Chattogram and Rawalpindi.

One statistical pattern clearly defined the rivalry for nearly two decades: Bangladesh’s batting collapses against quality reverse swing and spin bowling. Pakistan regularly crossed 400 runs in first innings totals, while Bangladesh frequently failed to survive beyond three sessions. During this phase, Pakistan maintained a winning percentage above 80 percent against Bangladesh in Tests.

However, the rivalry changed dramatically in 2024. Bangladesh stunned Pakistan by winning a historic 2-0 Test series in Pakistan. It was Bangladesh’s first-ever Test series win over Pakistan and one of the biggest upsets in Asian Test cricket. Bangladesh won the first Test by 10 wickets and followed it with a six-wicket victory in the second Test. Pakistan’s batting unit collapsed repeatedly against disciplined spin and seam bowling from Bangladesh.

That series transformed perceptions about Bangladesh cricket. Players like Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taskin Ahmed and Najmul Hossain Shanto emerged as match-winners. Bangladesh’s bowling attack became far more dangerous on slow Asian pitches, especially in Dhaka and Chattogram.

Pakistan, meanwhile, entered a period of inconsistency in Test cricket. Despite having world-class names like Babar Azam, Salman Agha and Shaheen Shah Afridi, Pakistan struggled to produce stable middle-order performances away from home. Their overseas Test record in Asia has become increasingly unpredictable.

The two-Test series in Bangladesh is therefore extremely important for both teams. The series is part of the 2025-27 ICC World Test Championship cycle and could shape the standings early in the competition.

Statistically, Bangladesh hold a psychological advantage because they defeated Pakistan 2-0 in the most recent Test series between the teams. Conditions in Dhaka also strongly favour Bangladesh’s spin-heavy bowling attack. Mirpur pitches traditionally become slower and offer sharp turn from day three onward. Bangladesh spinners have consistently dominated visiting teams there over the last five years.

Pakistan’s chances in the ongoing series will largely depend on three factors. Firstly their top-order must survive the new ball against Taskin Ahmed and Nahid Rana. Secondly experienced batters like Babar Azam, Saud Shakeel, Shan Masood must play long innings against spin.

Thirdly Pakistan’s own spinners - especially Noman Ali and Sajid Khan - need to exploit Bangladesh’s occasional middle-order collapses.

Pakistan recently appointed former captain Sarfraz Ahmed as Test head coach for this Bangladesh tour, while Shan Masood continues as captain. The squad also includes experienced names such as Shaheen Afridi, Mohammad Abbas and Rizwan, showing Pakistan’s intention to field a balanced attack suited for sub-continental conditions.

Top-order batter Tanzid Hasan and wicketkeeper-batter Amite Hasan have earned maiden call-ups to Bangladesh’s Test squad.

The selectors also brought back Shoriful Islam and Taskin Ahmed, apart from adding offspinner Nayeem Hasan in the squad. Taskin played the last of his 17 Tests against West Indies in Kingston in December 2024, so that also makes it a significant return in the squad.

They left out fast bowler Khaled Ahmed and Hasan Mahmud, as well as Jaker Ali and Hasan Murad On paper, Pakistan still possess greater overall Test experience and batting depth. But Bangladesh now have confidence, home advantage and momentum. Statistically and psychologically, this is the most evenly balanced Test rivalry phase between the two nations since Bangladesh entered Test cricket. If Pakistan’s senior batters perform consistently, they can still win the series 1-0. But if Bangladesh dominate the spin battle again, another historic home victory for the Tigers is entirely possible.
