Following Australia’s example, the UK has also announced a ban on social media for children under 16 years of age. I believe this is a very good step to protect children from misleading and inappropriate content available on social media platforms. There is a general consensus on the finding that social media causes mental health difficulties among children and is depriving them of time for healthier activities such as playing with friends, interacting with family and reading good books. This is without even mentioning the safety concerns that come with social media, which can enable children to communicate with adult strangers without their parents finding out. I hope that Pakistan will seriously consider banning social media for children under 16.
