An under-trial woman prisoner facing theft charges has absconded from the premises of the City Courts, the senior superintendent of the women prison told the Sindh High Court (SHC).

Filing a statement before the SHC, Senior Superintendent (SSP) of Women Prison Humaira Qayum submitted that UTP Ramzana was taken to the City Courts for case proceedings in a theft case where she escaped from the custody of the police.

A single bench of the high court had earlier directed the women prison SSP to appear before the court and explain about the escape of the female UTP whose bail application was pending before the court.

According to the prosecution, the complainant said the woman and her daughter were working in her house and they stole gold ornaments and valuables from her house and fled.

The applicant had earlier denied charges and said she was falsely implicated in the case.

The SSP said that another FIR with regard to escape of the female UTP had been registered by the City Courts police. She also placed on record the initial inquiry report with regard to escape of the woman.

She also informed the high court that the requisite action against the delinquent officials had been initiated.

The high court observed that Ramzana was accused of committing theft in the complainant ‘s house. The bench observed that the complainant had complained that the Gulberg police station personnel had given her a very difficult time during this whole ordeal.

The SHC took exception to the police personnel’s role in dealing with the case and observed that professionalism and respect, especially for a woman, were lacking.

The high court dismissed the bail application and directed the Gulberg police station to ensure that the complainants were treated professionally and with dignity by the police personnel.
