Another week, another series of horrifying headlines. This time, it is a female doctor subjected to an acid attack and several other instances of targeted violence against women. However, these are only the cases that make it to the news. Countless others remain hidden behind fear, stigma and silence. Such incidents are not merely crimes against individuals. They create a climate of fear for women across society. Families become increasingly anxious about the safety of their daughters, often responding with greater restrictions on their mobility, education and independence. In this way, violence against women affects not only its direct victims but also the freedoms of countless others. Until society stops excusing violence, institutions ensure swift accountability and perpetrators are held fully responsible for their actions, women will continue to live under the shadow of fear.
