ISLAMABAD: The latest Pakistan Economic Survey 2026 highlights a significant shift in political branding, revealing that Punjab Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif has emerged prominently by branding herself across a sweeping array of new government healthcare programs.
The Punjab government has outsourced 2,506 Maryam Nawaz Health Clinics and fully operationalized 115 Maryam Nawaz Hospitals by restructuring underperforming Rural Health Centers, according to the latest economic survey.
This strategy of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz mirrors a historical precedent set by the Pakistan Peoples Party, which has spent the past fifteen years expanding massive social welfare programs dedicated to the late leader Shaheed Benazir Bhutto.
Since its inception, the Benazir framework has grown into an expansive, multi-decade network of taxpayer-funded initiatives, including the Benazir Income Support Program, Benazir Nashonuma, Benazir Taleemi Wazaif, and Benazir Debit Cards.
However, the latest economic survey 2026 underscores a stark contrast in the current political landscape, as no other active or prominent leader- including Nawaz Sharif, Shehbaz Sharif, Imran Khan, Bilawal Bhutto, Asif Ali Zardari, Murad Ali Shah, or Sarfaraz Bugti- has their name attached to any government program. Maryam Nawaz stands alone among the country’s prime ministers and regional chief ministers in institutionalizing major public initiatives under her own personal name.
Analysts and political opponents including PMLN have historically opposed this concept, arguing that state resources should not be utilized for personal or party promotion, a criticism that was frequently leveled against the various programs named after Benazir Bhutto.
Independent observers say that politicians have been criticizing the Income Support Program launched in the name of Benazir Bhutto and still do so, even though it is a program in the interest of the people. According to observers, it is true to some extent that politicians should avoid personal advertising with government funds, a point of view of some quarters in this regard has been that if the government starts a comprehensive program for public service with good intentions, there is no problem in it. They say that the constitution and law do not prevent it, provided there is no corruption in it and these programs are in the interest of the people.
The economic survey also highlights that Punjab government has mobilized over 50,000 health workers under a Community Health Inspectors initiative, which has already digitally mapped 8.29 million families and over 45 million premises. Backed by Electronic Medical Record systems and automated FlexiCare attendance tracking, this model has also acted as a major employment driver, generating over 50,000 direct jobs.
This includes approximately 30,000 skilled roles prioritizing female professionals and Skilled Birth Attendants, over 10,000 roles for Medical Officers and Women Medical Officers as health managers, and more than 1,300 specialized consultant positions alongside 10,000 support staff roles, the report reveals.
