ISLAMABAD: The federal government has appointed internationally renowned public health expert Prof Dr Zulfiqar A Bhutta as Chairman of the Board of Governors (BoG) of the National Institute of Health (NIH), completing the constitution of the institute’s governing body more than two years after the previous board’s tenure expired.
According to a notification issued by the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination (MoNHSR&C) on June 11, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approved the appointment of Dr Zulfiqar Bhutta from among the members of the NIH Board of Governors under Section 6(4) of the National Institute of Health (Reorganisation) Act, 2021.
The appointment comes after the ministry formally notified six members of the NIH Board of Governors following federal cabinet approval, ending a prolonged governance vacuum at Pakistan’s premier public health institution.
The newly constituted board comprises Dr Ambreen Anwar, Maj Gen (R) Dr Pervez Ahmed, Maj Gen (R) Dr Irfan Ali Mirza, Prof Dr Zulfiqar A Bhutta, Prof Dr Saeed Sadiq Hamid and Dr Faisal Dar, in addition to ex-officio members.
