Rawalpindi:A notorious robber was killed while another arrested during an exchange of fire between police and motorcycle-riding suspects in the New Town area late at night.
According to police, a patrolling team signaled a suspicious motorcycle to stop during routine checking.Instead of complying, the suspects opened fire on the police party. During the ensuing gun battle, Constable Khurshid Ayaz sustained serious injuries and was shifted to a hospital for medical treatment.
Police returned fire, resulting in the death of one suspect, while his accomplice was arrested at the scene.Authorities also recovered a motorcycle, reportedly stolen from the New Town area, along with weapons from the suspects.
The deceased suspect was identified as Nigel alias Sheron, a hardened criminal with a history of involvement in robbery-cum-murder and several other criminal cases.Police said he had previously been convicted by a court in a robbery-cum-murder case and was also allegedly involved in the killing of another citizen during a robbery incident two weeks ago.Senior police officers rushed to the scene after receiving information about the encounter and supervised the subsequent investigation.
