ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court adjourned indefinitely an appeal by a demoted assistant accused of facilitating his brother’s unfair recruitment in the Toba Tek Singh district judiciary, after granting him time to hire a lawyer.
During the proceedings, Justice Hashim Kakar remarked that “some judges can also be like Pharaohs”.
A two-member bench, headed by Justice Hashim Kakar, heard the case on Wednesday. The appellants argued that they had been subjected to demotion and other service-related punishments through various administrative actions.
An officer from the district judiciary staff of Toba Tek Singh informed the court that one assistant had been accused of irregularities in facilitating his brother’s recruitment. It was alleged that the applicant, Hassan Chughtai, had taken the typing test on behalf of his brother, an allegation he reportedly admitted during the inquiry. The staff officer said that during the test, the candidate’s typing speed appeared unusually suspicious. “When the candidate was retested in the presence of an additional sessions judge, the typing speed was found to be significantly lower.”
Justice Hashim Kakar also observed that it was possible the candidate became nervous while typing, adding that “some judges can also be like Pharaohs”. Justice Kakar asked the appellants tough questions and observed that there was already an admission of guilt in the inquiry. Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim remarked that the appellants should be thankful they were still employed. The court then adjourned further proceedings sine die (for an indefinite period).
