A court on Wednesday extended police remand of an elderly man in a case pertaining to the murder of his wife.

Sixty-four-year-old Asghar Ali had surrendered to the police after allegedly murdering his 58-year-old wife Asma at their home in Orangi Town over domestic dispute last week. On Wednesday, the investigating officer produced the suspect before the judicial magistrate (West) on completion of his physical remand and requested a nine-day extension in his remand for completion of investigation. IO Dost Muhammad stated that he needed the custody of the suspect to produce him before the magistrate to record his confessional statement under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code. He said he would further interrogate the suspect to bring the actual facts to light.

After hearing the IO, the magistrate observed that the suspect was nominated in the FIR and allegation against him appears to be well-founded. “Investigation officer has requested for police custody remand on the ground of further interrogation to bring true facts on record which appears to be cogent reason for police custody remand,” the magistrate noted.

The court handed over the suspect to the police on six-day physical remand with direction to the IO to produce him on June 16 with a progress report. An FIR has been lodged at the Pakistan Bazaar police station under Section 302 (murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code on the behalf of the state.

According to the FIR, the suspect stated in his initial statement that at around 1:16am on June 4, he asked his wife for sex, but she refused. Enraged, he allegedly killed her using an iron rod and a cutter.
