The Sindh High Court (SHC) has granted bail to a man involved in circulating anti-state posts on social media.
Mohammad Ali Baig had been arrested by police for his alleged involvement in uploading posts on social media against the State and state institutions. The Malir Cantonment police had registered a case against the applicant under sections 124-A and 153-A of the Pakistan Penal Code on April 29.
The applicant’s counsel sought bail for his client, saying that he is 65 years old and suffering from bipolar disorder.
A single SHC bench headed by Justice Omar Sial said Baig has been accused of making social media posts against the State and its institutions, but the social media posts made are not of such a nature that would cause any national instability.
The court said that it is also yet to be seen if the medical condition with which Baig is afflicted might have contributed to him making the posts.
The court also said that the medical record produced by the applicant’s family confirms that the applicant is being treated for bipolar disorder.
The court granted bail to the applicant, saying that he is a 65-year-old man with no criminal record and afflicted with a psychiatric illness.
The court also directed the applicant’s family to ensure that his social media activities are monitored with their best efforts, and that the applicant’s treatment continues.
