The District Keamari police chief has taken notice of a video circulating online that shows two policemen allegedly receiving bribes from rickshaw passengers near Ghani Chowrangi in the Sher Shah area.
A Sindh police spokesperson said that both officials seen in the video were immediately suspended on the orders of the Keamari SSP, adding that a transparent and comprehensive inquiry has been initiated, with the Pak Colony DSP appointed as the inquiry officer.
The two officials, Irfan and Rafiq Ahmed of the SITE-B police station, were allegedly seen receiving cigarette packets from rickshaw passengers in the footage. The spokesperson said that zero tolerance would be shown for corruption, misuse of authority or any other unlawful activities by police personnel.
Police authorities have stressed that strict departmental action would be taken against the officials concerned if the allegations against them are proven during the inquiry.
‘Eidi collection’
Complaints have surfaced against personnel of the Nabi Bakhsh police station in District City over an alleged “Eidi collection campaign” being carried out in the name of checking citizens.
Videos showing alleged bribery at police checking points have also emerged. In the footage, a police motorbike squad can reportedly be seen setting up checkpoints behind the Capri Cinema throughout the day and allegedly collecting money from people.
The videos also show the officials not taking proper safety measures during checking, as they were allegedly stopping and searching citizens without wearing bulletproof jackets.
Area residents claimed that during morning and evening hours, motorbike riders and rickshaw passengers are routinely stopped on the pretext of checking and forced to pay bribes.
They said people are allegedly asked for money over issues such as missing bike documents, and the use of gutka and mawa. One of the videos also reportedly shows a police official chewing and spitting gutka during duty hours.
Garden DSP Mohsin Raza said that no formal complaint has been received, but any potential complaints would be reviewed and legal action would be taken if the allegations are found to be true.
