PPP wins at least five local government seats in Sindh by-polls

HYDERABAD: The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) dominated the by-elections that were held on Sunday for 13 local government seats in nine districts of Sindh.

Polling was held for vacant seats in Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, Dadu, Jamshoro, Ghotki, Jacobabad, Sukkur and other districts from 8am to 4pm without any break, in accordance with the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) directives.

The announcement of unofficial results by the ECP began at around 9pm. In Hyderabad, by-elections were held on two vacant seats of the municipal corporation. For the TMC Preetabad’s UC-43 chairman seat, independent candidate Muhammad Ali Sheikh secured victory with 953 votes, defeating the candidates of the PPP and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

Meanwhile, on the general member council seat of UC-49 Ward No 2, PPP candidate Alam Khan won after polling 336 votes. In Mirpurkhas district, independent candidate Bashir Ahmed secured 575 votes and defeated the PPP candidate for the general member seat of Ward No 7 in Town Committee Mirwah, Shujaabad taluka. In Ward No 4 of Town Committee Mirwah, independent candidate Barkat Ali won with 552 votes against the PPP candidate.

The winning candidates in Mirpurkhas had the support of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan and Syed Ali Nawaz Shah group. In Jamshoro, PPP candidate Javed Ali Otho won the vice chairman seat of Union Council No 7 Channa in Sehwan taluka with a heavy majority of 2,297 votes.

In Dadu district, PPP candidate Amjad Ali Khan secured 1,948 votes and defeated the Grand Democratic Alliance candidate by a large margin for the district council member seat of UC-31 Brira in Khairpur Nathan Shah taluka. In Jacobabad, PPP candidate Ahmed Ali Khan Channa won the district council member seat of UC-36 in Thul taluka with 2,302 votes.

In Sukkur, PPP candidate Liaquat Ali secured 368 votes and defeated the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) candidate for the UC-41 vice chairman seat in New Sukkur taluka. In Pano Aqil taluka of Sukkur district, JUI-F candidate Israr Ahmed defeated an independent candidate for the general member seat of UC-2 Ward No 3. The ECP had not announced results for the by-polls in Sujawal and Naushahro Feroze districts when this story was field.
