The Sindh government has decided to purchase 1,000 additional pink electric scooters for women and launch an inter-city People’s Bus Service to expand the province’s mass transit system. Moreover new bus routes from Khairpur to Rohri and Khairpur to Ranipur will be operational next week.
The announcement was made by Sindh Senior Minister for Information and Transport Sharjeel Inam Memon during a meeting of the transport department on Thursday. He said inter-city bus services would soon be launched in various districts, including Larkana, Dadu, Sehwan, Hyderabad and Sanghar.
He also announced that new EV and double-decker buses would be introduced in Karachi. Transport Secretary Asad Zamin, Sindh Mass Transit Authority Managing Director Salimullah Odho and other relevant officials attended the meeting, in which detailed discussions were held on new routes for the People’s Bus Service, distribution of Pink electric scooters, electric taxi service, and the ongoing and proposed mass transit projects.
Officials of the department informed the meeting that more new buses would reach Karachi in the next few months, further improving the provision of travel facilities to the citizens. Memon gave instructions to ensure immediate resolution of issues related to registration of electric scooters.
The meeting also agreed to introduce more double-decker and hybrid buses to modernise the mass transit system. Various projects aimed at providing environment-friendly and high-quality travel facilities to citizens were also reviewed.
The transport minister said the Sindh government had been taking practical steps to empower women and provide them with safe and dignified travel facilities. He added that the government was making serious efforts to provide modern, safe and high-quality transport services to the public.
He asserted that the transport system was being modernised in phases across Sindh, including Karachi. He said the convenience of women, students and daily commuters remained the government’s top priority. Projects such as EV buses, hybrid transport and pink electric scooters were not only environment-friendly but they would also prove economically beneficial for citizens, he remarked. Memon instructed the relevant authorities to accelerate work on the ongoing projects so that people could benefit from these facilities as soon as possible.
