Honour killing is a barbaric custom still practised in some parts of Pakistan. Many women are killed every year in the name of honour. According to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan’s annual report, 470 women were killed in 2025 in honour-related violence. Patriarchy is deeply rooted in many areas of Pakistan and male honour is considered damaged when a girl chooses her own spouse, pursues education or even demands her share in property. In many cases, this can lead to violence and even murder. Despite having several laws against this practice and equality for women being enshrined by the constitution, the implementation of these legal principles remains weak. Strict enforcement of laws, swift trials in honour killing cases and strong social and media pressure against perpetrators can help reduce such incidents and save many lives.
