LAHORE:A notification issued by the Punjab Workers Welfare Fund has drawn criticism from labour representatives, who termed the revised scholarship criteria “unjust” and “unrealistic” for workers’ children.

Under the May 4, 2026 notification, students must secure at least 60% marks for intermediate to postgraduate levels and 80% for medical and engineering programmes. The self-education scheme for workers and their spouses has also been discontinued from April 6, 2026.

Labour leaders, including Chaudhry Muhammad Saad, said the criteria ignore the socio-economic challenges faced by workers’ families and limit access to education. They urged the authorities to withdraw the notification and revise the policy in consultation with trade unions.

Previously submitted claims before April 6 will be processed under old rules, while new applications will follow the revised criteria.
