PESHAWAR: In a major milestone for Pakistan’s cultural heritage, the Kalash valleys have been inscribed on the World Heritage Tentative List of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

An official communique said this recognition marked an important step toward the eventual nomination of the valleys as a full World Heritage Site.“The achievement reflects the sustained efforts of the Directorate General of Archaeology & Museums, Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, in collaboration with federal institutions and international partners. The inclusion highlights both the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the Kalash community, renowned for its unique traditions, architecture, festivals, and way of life,” it added.

Officials said the listing was expected to significantly enhance national and international visibility of the Kalash valleys, attracting scholars, cultural experts, and responsible tourism.“We have been working on this for many years. This recognition will bring increased national and international attention, helping us preserve and protect this unique cultural asset for future generations,” said Abdul Samad, the director general, Archaeology and Museums KP.
