Islamabad: Climate policy and green financing took centre stage on Monday as Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Dr Musadik Malik met Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) Country Representative for Nepal and Pakistan Laura Jalosjoki to discuss expanded cooperation on sustainable development initiatives.

Jalosjoki briefed the minister on GGGI’s potential support for Pakistan in strategic planning to meet economic objectives, along with the development of institutional and financial frameworks to improve access to climate finance.

She highlighted the institute’s global experience in aligning development priorities with economic growth and climate resilience. The two reviewed the Pakistan Country Programme 2024-2028 and identified key areas for future collaboration, including greater private sector participation in climate finance, strengthening agriculture value chains, improving energy efficiency through AI-enabled monitoring systems and fostering innovation through startup ecosystems.

They also discussed the proposed Global Clean Hydrogen Programme for Pakistan, aimed at supporting the country’s transition towards net-zero pathways through capacity building and institutional readiness.

The initiative, already operational in nine countries, is projected to contribute to global emissions reductions of around 2.3 million metric tons of CO2. Dr Musadik Malik welcomed GGGI’s continued engagement and stressed that policy design must remain grounded in Pakistan’s realities, calling for practical and locally relevant solutions aligned with national development needs.
