Islamabad: Vice Chancellor of Allama Iqbal Open University Prof. Dr. Nasir Mahmood said that “An educated Pakistan is our dream and bringing every child into the education system is our mission so that the country can move towards progress and prosperity.”

He expressed these views while addressing the inauguration ceremony of the new building of the university’s regional campus in Sahiwal.

He said that the distance education system, once viewed with skepticism is now being considered by universities around the world as an effective model. He explained that when the system was introduced in 1974, it was difficult for the public to understand and people were not mentally prepared for it. However, over time it has proven to be highly successful.

The Vice Chancellor noted that Allama Iqbal Open University has become the largest university in Pakistan in terms of enrollment with approximately 1.4 million students currently studying while more than 5 million have graduated clear evidence of the system’s success.

He expressed concern that despite having over 200 universities in the country, only 19 percent of young people gain access to higher education, while a vast majority remains deprived. He emphasized that universities must improve their services, expand facilities and focus on quality education to ensure graduates meet market demands and secure better opportunities.

On this occasion, the Director General Regional Campuses, Dr. Malik Tauqeer Ahmed Khan said that the university is providing educational services across the country through its extensive network. He remarked that wherever Pakistan’s borders extend, the presence of Allama Iqbal Open University can also be found.
