HYDERABAD: A seminar titled ‘Empowered Public for Better Local Government System through Constitutional Amendment’ was held at Hyderabad Press Club, where political leaders emphasised the need for a strong and effective local government system in Pakistan.

Addressing the event, former federal minister Asad Umar said the event’s aim was to introduce reforms that strengthened local bodies and ensured resolution of public issues.

He clarified that empowering local governments did not mean weakening provinces or creating new ones, adding that increasing centralisation is harming the country.

Syed Zain Shah, president of the Sindh United Party, said that while empowering the local governments was essential, it should not be used for unconstitutional purposes.

He stressed that Sindh’s autonomy, resources and unity must not be compromised.

Chairman of Jeay Sindh Mahaz Riaz Chandio criticized federal policies, alleging that provinces were being deprived of their rights, including control over resources and water.

Other speakers, including former MPA Hasnain Mirza and Arif Mustafa Jatoi, called for devolving powers to the grassroots level, improving local governance, and ensuring fair distribution of resources.

The participants agreed that an effective, inclusive and empowered local government system was essential for addressing public issues and strengthening democracy.
