PESHAWAR: Class-III, Class-IV, and sanitation employees of the University of Peshawar and those from local government institutions on Monday staged separate protests against the non-payment of salaries and pensions.
The protesters had gathered outside the Administration Block of the university and later closed University Road, disrupting traffic. The protest has entered its third week. The protesting employees warned they would shut down University Road if their demands were not accepted. The employees accused the university administration and the provincial government of being non-seriousness to resolve the issue.
The protesters demanded timely payment of salaries and pensions and called for an immediate financial grant to pull the university out of its financial crisis. They warned that failure to meet their demands would lead to an expansion of the protest movement.
Due to the ongoing strike, all administrative activities at the university have been suspended, creating difficulties for students.Meanwhile, the employees and pensioners of local government institutions in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are facing severe financial difficulties due to non-payment of salaries and pensions for several months.
According to reports, the lack of funds and objections raised over pension payment summaries have delayed payments. Leaders of the Local Government Employees Federation stated that many families faced difficulties due to financial stress. They demanded immediate release of funds and warned that protests and strikes would begin if payments were not made at the earliest.
