Mangroves are not just trees; they are the backbone of marine ecosystems. Their destruction is the silent killer for the sea economy and the residents of the coastal areas of Pakistan. Karachi alone lost about 200 hectares of mangroves between 2010 and 2020. Mangroves are being cut down for urbanisation, housing schemes and land reclamation schemes. Mangroves protect the coastline from tsunamis, cyclones, flooding and also sea intrusion. They help restore the climate and also provide livelihood to the fishermen.
Pakistan has increased mangrove cover overall but localised destruction still remains a serious issue. In my opinion, local governments should take the initiative and collaborate with the younger generation and restore and plant mangroves. By doing so, our new generation would become aware of the importance of these water plants while also helping Pakistan’s economy and protecting it from the natural disasters.
