NOWSHERA: The local residents blocked the Grand Trunk (GT) Road for vehicular traffic on both sides for hours to protest the alleged highhandedness of a station house officer of Pabbi police on Tuesday.
The demonstration was led by the uncle of the victim nazim while the protesters demanded registration of a case against SHO Ashfaq Khan and a deputy superintendent of police (DSP) and their immediate suspension.
The injured nazim identified as Dawood was shifted to a hospital in Peshawar for the medical treatment after reportedly being subjected to physical torture by the SHO. Taking notice of the incident, District Police Officer (DPO) Nowshera, Ahmad Shah constituted an investigation committee under the supervision of SP (Investigation) Shah Asad Khan with DSP Adnan Azam as a member, and directed it to submit a report within two days.
Hundreds of residents from Dagai area in Pabbi tehsil staged a protest by blocking the GT Road at Pabbi, causing long queues of vehicles, including passenger buses, on both sides. The protest was led by local social activist Johar.
The protesters alleged that the Pabbi Police Station SHO had forcibly pulled the local government representative Dawood out of his vehicle and subjected him to severe torture without any justification.
They alleged that no case had been registered against Dawood at the police station and that he was not involved in any illegal or immoral activity, questioning the SHO’s actions. They termed the incident as blatant police brutality.The road remained blocked for several hours, severely disrupting traffic flow in the area.
A police spokesperson said that DPO Ahmad Shah reaffirmed the department’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice. He emphasized that no individual or official was above the law and that decisions would be made strictly on merit.
