The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) on Saturday took a significant step towards ensuring transparency, quality, and sustainability in all development projects by appointing a reputable third-party consultant to monitor ongoing and upcoming works across the city.
Officials said that the decision was formally approved by the City Council, reinforcing the KMC’s commitment to improving governance standards and delivering high-quality infrastructure to the citizens of Karachi.
With development projects exceeding Rs60 billion currently underway, the initiative aims to ensure that public funds translate into visible and meaningful improvements across the city.
Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab stated that the appointment of a third-party consultant follows public concerns and grievances regarding the quality and pace of development work. He emphasized that independent oversight, along with joint inspections involving KMC officers, will help guarantee that all projects meet the required standards.
“This initiative is not only about maintaining quality but also about ensuring timely completion of projects,” the mayor said. “We are committed to eliminating unnecessary delays and ensuring that development schemes are delivered within stipulated timelines.”
During a detailed briefing, Director General Technical Services Tariq Mughal apprised the mayor of the progress on various ongoing schemes. Wahab expressed dissatisfaction over the slow pace of work following Eid-ul-Fitr and warned of strict action against officers and contractors failing to meet deadlines.
“I want to see both work and its impact. If there is any compromise on quality, there will be consequences, including on postings and responsibilities of officers,” he asserted. “We are spending billions of rupees, and the results must be visible at any cost.”
Wahab was also briefed on several major development projects, including Toori Bangash Road, Azeempura Bridge, Gulshan Hadeed Road, AM Toufeeq Road, Sabiha Akhtar Road, Dadex Road, and other key schemes.
The meeting was attended by Municipal Commissioner KMC Abrar Jaffar, Financial Advisor KMC Gulzar Abro, Senior Director Coordination Akhlaq Ahmed, Director Media Daniyal Siyal; and other senior officials.
