ISLAMABAD: Senate Chairman Yusuf Raza Gilani Thursday said the 1973 Constitution clearly delineates the powers of state institutions, ensures transparent accountability, and upholds the principles of public representation.
He urged all political parties to rise above personal and partisan interests and demonstrate unity in national interest, stressing that adherence to the Constitution must remain a top priority, as national stability and progress depend on an unwavering commitment to constitutional principles.
“Parliament remains committed to making the legislative process more effective, transparent, and people-centric to ensure welfare of citizens,” he said in his message to the eve of the Constitution Day, noting that the Constitution stands as a symbol of Pakistan’s democratic identity, national unity, and constitutional supremacy.
He stressed that it not only provides stability to the state structure but also guarantees protection of fundamental rights of people. Gilani stressed that the Constitution of Pakistan is not merely a legal document but it also reflects the collective consciousness, political wisdom, and democratic resolve of the nation. He stressed that the supremacy of the Constitution, the rule of law, and promotion of democratic values are indispensable for the country’s development, stability, and prosperity.
Highlighting the historic significance of April 10, 1973, he noted that on this day, the nation unanimously adopted a Constitution that strengthened the federation, ensured protection of provincial rights, and established a balance among the state institutions. He added that the Constitution provides comprehensive guiding principles for the political system and serves as the foundation of democratic continuity.
The Senate chairman paid tribute to the Parliament of 1973 and political leadership of that era, particularly acknowledging the contributions of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. He stated that Bhutto rose above differences and prioritised national interest to help forge a unanimously agreed upon constitutional framework that continues to underpin the system of governance today.
He honoured the tireless efforts, leadership, and political foresight of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, noting that his contributions enabled Pakistan to achieve a unified, effective, and comprehensive Constitution — one that ensures justice for the underprivileged, representation for women, equal rights for minorities, and inclusive legislation for all segments of society.
Gilani also appreciated Pakistan’s proactive and dynamic diplomacy in the context of current global and regional developments, stating that it has enhanced the country’s stature and strengthened its positive image on the international stage.
In conclusion, he called upon the youth to develop a deeper understanding of the Constitution, civic rights, and democratic responsibilities, and to play an active role in the country’s development, noting that an informed and aware younger generation is the guarantor of Pakistan’s bright future.
