BARA: Inmates at Bara Sub-Jail expressed their grievances at a public forum on Thursday and called for steps to address them.
Speaking to journalists at the jail, the prisoners complained that police officials who register cases as complainants deliberately avoid appearing in court during hearings. They alleged that the officials neither produce evidence nor pursue the cases, causing prolonged delays in judicial proceedings.
The inmates maintained that, as a result, many people remain incarcerated for months and years, which is against the fundamental principles of justice. They alleged that some police personnel implicated innocent people in cases to show performance, but later failed to appear in court, leaving such cases pending indefinitely.
The prisoners urged the authorities to ensure that investigating officers appear in court and record statements on time. They pointed out that Bara Sub-Division is a densely populated area and that having only one judge for the entire subdivision is insufficient.
The prisoners called on the government to appoint at least two additional judges at the Bara courts to ensure the timely dispensation of justice. They stressed that justice would remain unattainable without practical measures.Responding to the complaints aired during the public forum, jail authorities assured that the grievances would be taken seriously and forwarded to the relevant departments.
