PESHAWAR: The police here on Sunday claimed to have arrested the attackers, who had shot and injured a senior doctor in the provincial capital on March 31.
Speaking at a press conference, Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Mian Saeed Ahmad said that the attackers were arrested with the help of the Safe City cameras.He said that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) had been formed under SSP, Operations, Farhan Khan and SSP, Investigation, Ayesha Gul to probe the incident.
It may be mentioned that unidentified assailants opened fire on Dr Asif Malik in University Town when he was returning home from his clinic. The attack had left the doctor seriously injured. The police had registered a case under sections 324 and 427 on the complaint of his son, Yousaf Malik, at the Town Police Station.
The CCPO said investigators utilised Safe City Cameras and CCTV footage to trace the suspects, identifying the vehicle used in the crime and tracking their movement. The attackers had changed the number plate but they were identified later with the original number plate of the car from other cameras.
The CCPO said police recovered the vehicle along with the pistol used in the attack and arrested two suspects, Sultan Raza and Shafaat Hussain, residents of Kohat.During interrogation, the accused confessed that the attack was motivated by a dispute with the victim a few days back.
Saeed said a bank robbery was foiled during the last few days when a cop sacrificed his life while the culprits of the second one would be held soon along with the looted cash and valuables.
He said several gangs of snatchers and street criminals had been busted during the last few months and many of its members were arrested and looted cash and valuables recovered. Many of them were also killed and injured during encounters.
