A man died after falling into a drain near Lea Market in the Napier area of the city, rescue officials said on Saturday.
The incident occurred near the Tanga Stand adjacent to the vegetable market, where the man reportedly fell into an open drain. Volunteers from the Edhi Foundation conducted a search operation and later retrieved the body. The deceased was shifted to the Civil Hospital Karachi.
He was subsequently identified as 45-year-old Yaseen, son of Khuda Bakhsh, a resident of Saifi Lane in Lyari’s Baghdadi area.
According to eyewitnesses, the man was seen running before he fell into the drain. However, his elder brother, Maula Bakhsh, stated that Yaseen was unmarried and mentally unstable, adding that the incident appeared to be accidental rather than a case of suicide.
The police said further inquiry into the incident was underway.
On Thursday, two women were rescued after their moving car fell into a sinkhole when a section of road suddenly caved in on Tariq Road.
Road conditions across the city remained poor following recent rainfall. The incident occurred within the limits of the Ferozabad police station, where a portion of the road suddenly collapsed, causing a passing vehicle to sink into a deep pit. As the car went down, water began entering the vehicle, trapping the two women inside.
Citizens and traffic police personnel rushed to the scene and safely rescued the women, shifting them to a secure location. Later, traffic police, with the help of a private lifter, pulled the car out of the sinkhole.
Police and local administration officials also reached the site after being informed. The affected area was cordoned off with barriers to prevent further incidents.
Traffic police said a major sewerage line runs approximately 20 to 25 feet beneath the site, and a manhole wad located at the exact point where the road collapsed.
