LAHORE:The Pakistan Peoples Party's Lahore chapter has announced the launch of a new public safety campaign titled 'Dhakan Lagao Jane Bachao,' which translates to covering open drains to save lives.

According to a press release, the announcement was made by PPP Lahore President Faisal Mir on Wednesday during a seminar organised by the party's Information Wing to highlight the alarming rise in the dog-bite incidents across the City.

The campaign is specifically aimed at drawing public and governmental attention to the dangers posed by uncovered manholes, which have already claimed the lives of several children. Mir cited a recent tragedy in which a child drowned in an open drain, and noted that a young girl had similarly lost her life under comparable circumstances. The party intends to use the campaign as a platform to demand immediate corrective action from the authorities responsible for urban infrastructure maintenance.

Addressing the party's status as a coalition partner with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, Mir was unequivocal in stating that political alliance does not equate to silence on matters of public concern. He directed pointed criticism at the Punjab government's handling of the stray dog menace, firmly opposing what he described as the brutal killing of stray animals. Mir argued that existing Pakistani regulations mandate the vaccination of stray dogs against rabies rather than their slaughter. He flayed the Punjab government's reported directive to eliminate stray dogs using methods akin to those employed by the Counter Terrorism Department against criminals, calling the comparison deeply troubling. He urged the provincial government to reallocate funds from infrastructure projects towards establishing a proper and humane vaccination programme.

Mir also took the occasion to commend the contributions of PPP Lahore's Central Organising Committee Convener, Majeed Ghori, acknowledging his active role in mobilising the party around critical public safety concerns affecting ordinary citizens.
