MINGORA: The Swat Qaumi Jirga on Tuesday condemned a recent improvised explosive device (IED) blast near the residence of Awami National Party (ANP) leader and a member of the jirga’s working committee, Mumtaz Ali Khan, in the Shakardara area of Matta tehsil.
In a statement issued by its spokesperson, the jirga expressed concern over the recurrence of such incidents, warning that they posed a serious threat to fragile peace in the region. The jirga urged law enforcement agencies to take immediate and decisive action against elements attempting to destabilize Swat and to ensure that those facing security threats are provided with foolproof protection.
The statement noted that a similar IED/remote-controlled blast had taken place near the same residence on November 12, 2025 in which Mumtaz Ali Khan had remained unharmed. However, the jirga lamented that despite the passage of several months, the investigation into the earlier incident had neither been completed nor the perpetrators had been identified.
Calling the repeated attacks alarming, the jirga emphasized that such incidents raised serious questions about the performance of security institutions. It demanded the prompt arrest of those involved in both attacks, including facilitators, and called for exemplary punishment in accordance with the law.
The spokesperson said that during the recent visit of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Inspector General of Police, Zulfiqar Hameed, to Swat, authorities had been apprised of the security threats faced by various political and social figures.
