Many people, especially young girls, are often forced into marriage by their families. They are denied the basic right to choose their life partner. This happens due to social pressure, cultural traditions and to avoid negative social judgement. Such marriages can often lead to issues such as domestic abuse.
Islam clearly emphasises the importance of consent in marriage. Pakistani law also declares forced marriage illegal under the Prevention of Anti-Women Practices Act, 2011. Despite all this, the practice continues due to lack of awareness. It is the responsibility of the government, society and media to work together and eliminate this practice from our society. People should be educated about the importance of consent in marriage. The government should strictly deter people from this practice. Only then can we create a fair and respectful society.
