In many cases, tax authorities appear satisfied upon receiving the payment challan from departments, without thoroughly verifying whether the tax has been deposited in accordance with the allocated budget or actual transactions. If tax compliance within government departments is not rigorously monitored, ensuring proper tax collection from the broader private sector becomes even more challenging. When the trade deficit reaches alarming levels such as 25 per cent, capital investment becomes imperative. Without strengthening domestic revenue generation and improving tax administration, it becomes increasingly difficult to manage the current account deficit and maintain balance of payments stability.

Since the Punjab government has digitised its budgeting system, a similar digitisation of tax collection aligned with budget allocations would enhance transparency and accountability. Such integration would allow real time comparison between budgeted revenues and actual collections, provide advance estimates of expected tax contributions from each department and immediately highlight shortfalls. In case of discrepancies, it would enable the tax authorities to conduct timely and targeted investigations. Digitisation, transparency and strict verification mechanisms are essential to strengthen fiscal discipline and ensure sustainable economic stability.
