PHC seeks report on facilities at Peshawar Zoo

PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Monday sought a detailed report on the welfare of animals and provision of facilities at the Peshawar Zoo.

The case was heard by Justice Waqar Ahmad and Justice Inamullah Khan. During the proceedings, the chief legislation officer informed the court that meetings were underway to introduce amendments to the wildlife law, and progress was expected soon.

Justice Waqar Ahmad observed that the zoo administration should be granted adequate powers to effectively manage its affairs.Additional Advocate General Bilal Ahmad Khalil apprised the PHC that a liaison mechanism was being established to address the issues, while amendments to the wildlife law were also in progress. He added that the provincial government was taking steps to ensure the protection of animals.

Counsel for the petitioner, Barrister Ahmad Shah, raised questions about funds allocated for animals and their food.In response, wildlife authorities stated that confiscated animals were being kept on a temporary basis.

The court directed that necessary legislation should be enacted to resolve the issues and instructed the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Wildlife Department to submit a comprehensive report at the next hearing.
