The sight of garbage accumulating on the streets has unfortunately become all too common in various parts of Karachi. Residents in areas like Gulshan-e-Iqbal and Liaquatabad often report overflowing trash bins and delays in garbage collection. In numerous streets, heaps of waste are left unattended for days, resulting in unpleasant living conditions for those nearby. This scenario raises significant concerns regarding the effectiveness of Karachi’s waste management system. Every day, Karachi generates thousands of tons of solid waste, yet the city continues to face challenges with consistent collection and appropriate disposal. Although the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board was created to enhance sanitation services, many residents still face irregular waste collection.

Some officials claim that the city’s vast population complicates waste management. While the size of Karachi undoubtedly presents challenges, other major cities worldwide successfully manage waste through improved planning and stricter oversight. It is imperative for the authorities to bolster waste collection systems, enhance monitoring of sanitation contractors and increase public awareness regarding proper disposal methods. Clean streets are vital for public health and the dignity of our city. Karachi deserves a cleaner and healthier environment.
