HARIPUR: A farmer was shot dead when Wapda’s security guard posted on the security of Tarbela Dam opened fire here on Tuesday, police said.The security guard opened fire when the two men riding a boat entered the dam’s area declared as a red zone, Tarbela Dam sources said.
Ghazi police quoted Sher Azam Khan, a resident of Darra Moht Ghazi village as saying that his brother Sher Aslam Khan, 35, and their nephew Raza Khan were on the way to a neighboring hills for cutting grass for their cows via Tarbela lake by a boat. When the boat was moving towards their destination its engine broke down abruptly. The boat started drifting downstream and entered the red zone or main dam area despite efforts both uncle and nephew failed to bring the engine in working condition.
According to the complainant, the drifting boat was in the middle of Tarbela’s main dam area when one of the security guards cautioned them to stay away from the dam area and blew warning whistles.
However, the boat riders were unable to drive the inoperable boat out of the prohibited area due to mechanical fault and fell victim to the firing of extra vigilant security guard.Sher Aslam died on the spot by security guard’s firing while his nephew Raza Khan escaped unhurt as he hid himself behind the boat’s engine, the complainant told police. The rescue workers and police shifted the body to Tehsil Headquarter Hospital Ghazi.
The Ghazi police registered a criminal case against the WAPDA’s security guard responsible for opening fire at the farmers and arrested him for investigation. Tarbela Dam sources said that a firing incident occurred in the limits of Tarbela’s main dam area which was a prohibited area for every kind of boating or fishing.
Meanwhile two young men were shot dead while another one critically injured when one of their rivals opened fire at them for unknown reasons in the limits of Beer Police Station.
