LAHORE:An incident at the girls’ hostel of the University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore has drawn strong criticism from students.
IslamiJamiatTalaba (IJT) has condemned the treatment of female students as unacceptable. The group said that late at night students were forced to vacate the hostel and faced disrespectful behaviour, which it described as regrettable and damaging to the institution’s reputation.
It demanded that the Vice Chancellor take immediate notice and conduct transparent investigations into the conduct of the senior warden. In response, a spokesperson for UET Lahore clarified that all classes have already been shifted to online mode and hostel residents were instructed to return home. Most students had vacated, but a few postgraduate students who also work outside the university refused to leave. The spokesperson said that with classes online, the hostel mess had been closed and notices had been issued.
He added that keeping the hostel system active for a small number of students was not possible and that their safety and food arrangements could become problematic. The spokesperson assured that the Vice Chancellor has ordered further investigations and promised that if any inappropriate behaviour or negligence is found, action will be taken under university rules.
