The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has recommended recognition of several postgraduate dental programmes of Liaquat College of Medicine and Dentistry through the University of Karachi.
According to an official communication sent to the director general of the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination, the council considered a request from Liaquat College of Medicine and Dentistry seeking a change in the affiliation of its already recognised postgraduate programmes from Ziauddin University to the University of Karachi.
The request was reviewed by the Postgraduate Medical Education Committee in its meeting held on January 7, 2026. Subsequently, the council approved the proposal through circulation on January 29, 2026.
The PMDC has recommended that the postgraduate programmes of Liaquat College of Medicine and Dentistry, Karachi, through the University of Karachi be recognised under Section 25 of the PMDC Act, 2022 and included in the Second Schedule of the Act.
The programmes proposed for recognition include Master’s of Dental Surgery (MDS) in Prosthodontics, Orthodontics, Operative Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Periodontology, Sciences of Dental Materials, Oral Pathology, Community Dentistry, and Oral Biology and Tooth Morphology.
In addition, the council has also recommended recognition of the Fellowship of the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (FCPS) in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery as an additional dental qualification.
The letter issued by the PMDC registrar states that the recognition will apply to degrees granted on or after November 22, 2014, and has been forwarded to the Ministry of National Health Services for further necessary action.
