The unprecedented escalation of military action involving Iran, Israel and the US has laid bare a painful truth: the global system designed to prevent war is faltering. In the past week, joint US-Israeli strikes on Iranian territory and subsequent retaliation have plunged the Middle East into a wider conflict, sparking thousands of strikes, widespread casualties and regional instability beyond control. Amidst this escalation, the UN and its Security Council have been unable to forge a united response. Deep divisions among major powers have stalled meaningful action, leaving the world to watch as war expands with little restraint from the body tasked with peacekeeping.
Statements from the UN secretary general, however well-intended, resemble commentary rather than effective diplomatic intervention. This crisis underscores a stark reality: when powerful states act unilaterally and international mechanisms remain deadlocked, the promise of collective security becomes an illusion. It is high time that thoughtful global leadership comes together to redesign or replace ineffective platforms and restore genuine multilateralism. Peace must be anchored in fairness and accountability and not in the unchecked power of the strongest.
