ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has taken serious note of the deteriorating law and order situation in parts of Gilgit-Baltistan, particularly Skardu, where violent protests have caused widespread damage to public and private infrastructure and disrupted normal life.
He said that peaceful protest is a constitutional right but must be exercised within the framework of law. The president strongly condemned the wanton destruction and damage to public, private and non-governmental organisation properties, including public buildings, educational institutions and international organisation offices. He said such actions are unlawful and fall within the ambit of serious criminal conduct under applicable law, and cannot be justified under any circumstances. He urged all stakeholders to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could escalate tensions. He stressed that stability and respect for law are essential for safeguarding national interests and public confidence.
