The Sindh High Court has directed the inspector general of police to submit a comprehensive report over the alleged extrajudicial killing of three persons during police custody.
Petitioner Mohammad Ali submitted that his son Hamdan along with Jalil and Niaz were in police custody in connection with criminal cases and they were killed in a purported police encounter in Shah Latif Town on February 17.
The petitioner’s counsel Jibran Nasir submitted that the petitioner’s son had gone missing on December 29, 2025 and he was shown arrested during the pendency of the detention case in the high court.
He submitted that police admitted that the petitioner’s son was handcuffed at the time of the police encounter and did not attempt to escape, raising serious doubts about the official narrative of the police encounter.
The counsel said the police did not provide the postmortem and medico-legal reports and denied the custody of the body of the deceased, resulting in the denial of dignified burial in violation of the police rules.
He further submitted that the death of te petitioner’s son squarely falls within the definition of custodial death under torture and custodial death law, which provides for an independent and impartial inquiry; however, no inquiry had been initiated yet.
An SHC single bench, headed by Justice Adnan-ul-Karim Memon, after the preliminary hearing of the petition, issued notices to the IGP and others and called their comments. The court also directed to submit a comprehensive report through the DIG Special Branch, special headquarters Keamari, who shall also be in attendance on the next date of the hearing.
