HYDERABAD: Chairman Sindh Irrigation and Drainage Authority (SIDA), Qabool Muhammad Khatian has said that climate change is occurring rapidly, affecting not only daily life but also the agricultural sector.
He expressed these views while speaking during a meeting with a delegation of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) at the SIDA Secretariat in Hyderabad.
The SIDA chairman said that due to climate change, water flows are decreasing day by day, posing a serious challenge to water management engineers. He emphasized that the use of modern technology can help reduce potential risks.
On the occasion, FAO Pakistan’s Regional Anticipatory Action Specialist, Damien, said that FAO Pakistan is actively working in Sindh to minimize losses from potential natural disasters and to strengthen early warning systems. He added that FAO is keen to improve preparedness to face natural calamities, reduce their impacts, and enhance early response mechanisms in the irrigation sector.
During the meeting, both sides stressed the need to tackle the risks of climate change, floods, and drought through effective planning and strong institutional coordination.
FAO Sindh Project Manager Pedro, along with Ashfaq Nahyon, Mubashir Hussain, SIDA General Manager Transition Sadiq Khasakheli, and other officials were also present at the meeting.
