BANNU: The police thwarted a late-night attack on the Fatehkhel Police Post by militants, forcing the attackers to flee after a severe exchange of fire.
According to police, the militants equipped with sophisticated weapons launched a heavy attack on the Fatehkhel Post in the limits of Mandan Police Station.They said that intense firing continued between the police and militants for nearly an hour, targeting the positions used by the assailants, including the rooftop of a nearby market and a private school building.
Upon receiving information about the attack, District Police Officer (DPO), Bannu, Yasir Afridi along with senior officers including the Superintendent of Police (Rural), SP Headquarters, Sub-divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Rural-II, SDPO City, station house officer Mandan and additional personnel from Police Lines, rushed to the scene with armoured personnel carriers.
Officials said the coordinated and professional response forced the attackers to flee under cover of darkness. All personnel deployed at the Fatehkhel Post remained unharmed while security in the area was further tightened.
A search operation was also underway to apprehend the perpetrators in the area.In a separate incident, militants opened fire on a Haveed police mobile at Gulbahar Chowk, triggering a heavy exchange of gunfire. The attackers abandoned their vehicle at the scene and fled.
Following directives from Bannu Region Deputy Inspector General Sajjad Khan, heavy police contingents reached the site, cordoned off the area and launched a search operation. The police said the situation was under control and further action was in progress.
