ABBOTTABAD: Local philanthropists and medical students contributed Rs2 million for the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre during a fundraising campaign here on Sunday.
The event was organized by the Shaukat Khanum Volunteer Team Abbottabad.Notable figures of the region including Dr Noman Siddiqui, District Health Officer Abbottabad Dr Shahzad Iqbal, Dr Javed of Women’s Dentistry Hospital, XEN Wapda Raja Asfandyar, along with students, business leaders, cancer survivors, and members of civil society attended the event.
Addressing the gathering, Shaukat Khanum’s Marketing Associate Director Muhammad Amir presented a multimedia briefing highlighting the institution’s journey and achievements.He recalled that Pakistan faced a severe shortage of cancer treatment facilities three decades ago, and Shaukat Khanum was established at a critical time through the collective support of the nation.
He said that following the successful operation of hospitals in Lahore and Peshawar, a new Shaukat Khanum hospital has been constructed in Karachi. Muhammad Amir stated that the hospital’s estimated budget for the current year stood at Rs43 billion, of which Rs11 billion would be generated through clinical services, while the remaining amount will be met through zakat, donations, and charitable contributions. He emphasized that all donations received by Shaukat Khanum are fully audited and transparently utilized.He said that individuals can become founding members of the Karachi hospital by donating Rs750,000, with donors’ names permanently displayed.
