One suspect was killed and another arrested during an alleged police encounter in Clifton Block 2 on Wednesday, police said.

Officials from the Boat Basin police station claimed the incident occurred during a routine patrol when they encountered two suspects allegedly involved in street crimes. According to the police, the suspects were fleeing after snatching mobile phones from citizens when officers reached the area.

The police stated that the suspects opened fire on the patrol team, prompting retaliatory action. As a result, one suspect was killed on the spot, while his accomplice was arrested without resistance. Weapons and ammunition were reportedly recovered from their possession.

The body of the deceased was shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for legal formalities. The police identified the deceased as Haider Ali, around 20 years old. Officials further claimed that both the killed and arrested suspects were members of a notorious rickshaw gang involved in multiple street crime incidents across various parts of the city.

Following the reported killing, family members of the deceased, along with dozens of men and women, gathered outside the Karachi Press Club to stage a protest. The protesters claimed that Ali Haider, son of Khadim Hussain and a resident of Gulshan-e-Maamar, had gone to Sea View for recreation when the police allegedly opened fire after a rickshaw failed to stop.

The family alleged that Haider was unlawfully killed and demanded action against the police officers involved.
