ALPURI: Most upper link roads in Shangla remained closed following heavy rains and snowfall, forcing residents in the Kas-Leloni and Matta-Leloni roads to begin clearing snow themselves after waiting several days for government departments’ assistance.

The local residents said their action was not just an attempt to reopen roads but also a reflection of public awareness, collective responsibility, and love for their area. During the first spell of last week’s storm, three to four feet of snow was recorded in upper areas, followed by an additional one to two feet in a second spell.

As a result of the record snowfall, more than 47 upper link roads across Shangla district were blocked. Even after eight days, most routes have yet to be reopened, causing severe difficulties to the residents.

On Kas-Leloni road, due to delays in the arrival of government machinery and the worsening situation, residents started removing snow using shovels and other hand tools.

Locals said patients, elderly people, and students were facing serious hardships because of prolonged road closures, prompting the community to collectively decide to make the road usable on a self-help basis.

Meanwhile, snow removal work is underway in some areas under the supervision of Tehsil Municipal Administrations (TMAs) and the Commination and Works Department, but limited resources and continued bad weather have slowed restoration efforts. Unexpected snowfall last Thursday further created uncertainty across Shangla, worsening conditions in already affected areas.

Residents of upper areas are facing acute shortages of food, fuel, medicines, and other basic necessities. Electricity supply in several areas remained suspended, compounding difficulties amid the intense cold.

The residents have urged the district administration and relevant departments to ensure the immediate clearance of roads in upper areas and the provision of rations and essential services.

According to the Meteorological Department, more rain and light snowfall over mountain ranges are expected in Shangla and other upper northern areas from today (Sunday) until February 3.

However, the new spell is expected to be weak in nature. Still, intermittent heavy rain and snowfall after four days of severe dry cold are likely to intensify the cold, causing a slight but effective drop in temperatures.
