PBC elects new vice chairman, condemns campaign against judges

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) on Monday held its 248th meeting, which was chaired by Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan in his capacity as chairman of the council.

According to an official statement, the council conducted a secret ballot to elect its Vice Chairman for the year 2026. Peer Muhammad Masood Chishti secured 15 votes, while Qazi Muhammad Arshad received eight votes in the closely watched election.

With a clear majority, Peer Muhammad Masood Chishti was elected as the Vice Chairman of Pakistan Bar Council for 2026. The statement further noted that Munir Ahmed Malik from Karachi was elected as Chairman of the PBC Executive Committee for the year 2026.

During the meeting, the Pakistan Bar Council also strongly condemned the ongoing smear campaign targeting judges of the Lahore High Court and the Islamabad High Court. The council described the campaign as unacceptable and deeply concerning.

The council reaffirmed its firm commitment to safeguarding the independence of the judiciary and upholding the supremacy of Constitution and the rule of law. The PBC reiterated that it would continue its struggle for the protection of judicial independence and promotion of constitutional governance across the country.
