PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Wednesday in a petition filed against throwing waste in a graveyard in Charsadda directed the district administration and civic bodies to allocate a proper site within one month for dumping the garbage.

During the hearing, Justice Qazi Jawad Ehsanullah remarked that this was a very serious issue and proper arrangements must be made so that the health and other problems faced by the local people could be resolved.

The case was heard by a two-member bench comprising Justice Sibatullah Khan and Justice Qazi Jawad Ehsanullah.

Deputy Commissioner, Charsadda, Azmatullah Wazir, the petitioner’s counsel and the counsel for Tehsil Municipal Administration (TMA), Charsadda, appeared before the court.

The petitioner’s lawyer informed the court that the administration was dumping garbage and waste from the entire area into the main graveyard of Charsadda and had turned it into a dumping site. He said that waste collected from Charsadda City was being thrown into the graveyard, due to which foul smell had spread and local residents were finding it difficult to breathe. He requested that some other place be allocated for this purpose.

On this occasion, the lawyer for TMA told the court that other locations were being explored for establishing a dumping site in Charsadda, and as soon as a site was allocated, disposal work would be started there.

Charsadda DC Azmatullah Wazir told the court that there was no barren land near Charsadda; the available land was very limited and the suitable area was far away, which would involve high expenditure.

Justice Qazi Jawad Ahsanullah observed that this was a very important issue and arrangements must be made as serious health problems were being created.

The bench granted one month to identify a suitable site. The Deputy Commissioner requested that more time be granted, saying that arrangements would be made to resolve the issue.

After hearing the arguments, the court directed the relevant authorities to allocate a site for garbage dumping within one month and adjourned the hearing.
