An enraged mob in Orangi Town set an alleged dacoit on fire after he shot and killed a man during a mugging attempt on Tuesday.

A citizen, Abdul Hanan, was killed while resisting a robbery in Baloch Goth, Sector 7F, within the jurisdiction of the Orangi Town police station. Following the shooting, angry residents caught one of the fleeing robbers, brutally tortured him, and eventually set him ablaze. A video of the incident had since gone viral on social media.

The footage showed the suspect tied to an electric pole as the mob beats him, pours petrol over him, and sets him on fire. The injured man could be seen trying to escape the flames. Police officials said that when law enforcers reached the spot, they extinguished the fire using a fire extinguisher, but the suspect later died from his injuries. He was identified as Sajid, son of Zareen Dad.

The police registered three separate cases in connection with the episode. The first pertains to the murder of Hanan, filed by his father-in-law, Gul Muhammad Khan, and included charges of murder and robbery. The second related to the illegal weapon recovered from the deceased suspect. The third case, filed by the state, names 30 to 35 unidentified individuals suspected of participating in the mob violence.

The police said they received a report at 8am on December 1 and, upon arrival, found that two robbers had attempted the mugging, one of whom escaped. The other had been captured and set on fire by residents. Meanwhile, SHO Orangi Town Yousuf Mehar had been suspended for negligence, with orders to report to the West Zone Headquarters.
