Despite repeated discussions, incidents of harassment, domestic violence and public-space insecurity continue to rise. This not only affects women’s physical wellbeing but also restricts their freedom, mobility and participation in society. Many women fear travelling alone, using public transport or even stepping out for work or education. Such an environment discourages half of our population from contributing to the nation’s social and economic development. Moreover, numerous cases go unreported due to social pressure, inadequate support systems and fear of lengthy legal procedures.
There is an immediate need for stronger implementation of existing laws, establishment of safer public spaces, improved street lighting, functional helplines and women-friendly police units. Educational campaigns should also be launched to challenge harmful stereotypes and promote respect and equality. Ensuring women’s safety is a moral responsibility for a civilised and progressive society. I hope the authorities take notice of this issue and adopt concrete measures to create a safer and more inclusive Pakistan for women.
