The recent incident at Nipa Chowrangi in Karachi, where a three-year-old boy fell into an open manhole and died, reflects an alarming collapse of civic management. An uncovered sewer on a major road is unacceptable and shows how routine safety checks are being ignored. I urge municipal authorities to conduct an immediate citywide audit of manholes, ensure proper covers and introduce strict monitoring protocols. Rescue services must also be upgraded with modern equipment to handle emergencies effectively. Karachi’s residents, especially children, deserve safe public spaces. This tragedy should compel the administration to prioritise infrastructure safety and prevent such needless loss from ever happening again.
